After the children had left home we decided to build our own home (husband is Architect) and planned to move into a smaller house in Cardiff to enable us to do this. We had a small plot in Heredfordshire, but without planning permission. Our plans did not work out. The recession caught up with us and we lost a lot of money so we sold the land and stayed put in Cardiff for 13 years where we were, in fact, rather content.
During the year 2000 we got back on our feet again and could afford to move to Cowbridge where a good deal of our social life already took place (Drama, Bridge etc).
Our present house is one of two attached Edwardian villas on the main street. They were built in 1906 on the site of a larger, much older house.

and costume on dummy. Conservatory beyond.
Without altering the character too much we made a few structural alterations – an en-suite bathroom/dressing room, knocked the two reception rooms into one, added a conservatory, new kitchen and finally converted the attic into an office.
I am particularly proud of my hand stenciled paper in the living room and our collection of prints and water colours done by Jim.

stencilled wallpaper (gold oak leaves)
In various places of the house are some of my costumes on dressmakers dummies.
The bust in the picture above was used in a shop display to model bras - it is now a lamp.
The punk head is called Sam and we bought him at Winchester Art College's Graduation Show.
On one wall in our bedroom is what I call ‘my Wedding wall’ – photos of family weddings throughout the decades and in the conservatory a similar ‘Baby Wall’ – our grandchildren.

We are fortunate to have a reasonable sized garden which I redesigned and developed almost from scratch – only the old Bramley apple tree and a heather bed are left from the original. It is divided loosely into ‘rooms’ which include a gravel garden, a pond etc. We love it and think that we are privileged to be able to live here.
Cowbridge is generally thought of as an expensive place to live and is regarded as one of the ‘gems’ of the Vale.
Cowbridge has a webcam: www.cowbridge.co.uk/shopping/cowbridge-web-camera if you want to see a view of the High Street.
We know a lot of people here and are well settled into the community. I belong to two bridge clubs, U3A, (University of the 3rd Age) , and am on the committee for ‘Cowbridge in Bloom’.

Jim has recently joined Rotary and we both belong to the Town Twinning Group and our local Amateur Dramatic Society – this since 1972. I am the wardrobe mistress and Jim the set builder/scene painter/stage manager. He was also Chairman for ten years. Our lives are not dull and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

What a beautiful home you have. The Vale certainly does seem quite a wonderful place to live, beautiful scenery and interesting people.
It is so much fun to see some of your costumes. (Don't know if you received the message I sent you about costumes for the ghost in Blithe Spirit? Now I have seen one of your designs for that play.)
You and your husband are so talented, and energetic!
Promise to come back for another visit soon.
xo
I so enjoyed looking at this, reading the words and examining pictures. Interesting to me, looking at your mothers legs! I have a photo of my mother, and the legs are the same... they are even standing in similar poses, ankles, knees and thighs close together.. it just reminded me of my dearest mum. (Are we similar ages I wonder.. another 18 months I get the bus pass!)Your home looks so interesting, lots of different items to look at, I can imagine being a new visitor there and seeming rude as I stared at everything. They say a home reflects the person who lives in it, who is responsible in the main for the decor and so on... are you colourful, lively, animated, a butterfly mind, can't bear to part with things, like to be surrounded by beautiful memories and colour, no time for magnolia?
Is Cowbridge anywhere near RAF St Athan... it's just that I lived there for a short time in the seventies, and the name rings a bell.
Thank you both for your kind comments.
Frances - yes I did get your message about Blithe Spirit. As far as I recall I made a grey satin costume - a long evening type dress of the period with a shrug. The actress liked it so much she bought the costume and regrettably I don't have any pictures.
As a family we are all (or have been) designers of one kind or another and are able to make lots of things which we enjoy doing.
For the record I am nearly 69 going on 35! which was my favorite age.
We hoard everything - you never know when it might be useful. Stuff is crammed everywhere and I am madly sentimental about things that others have made/given me or we've bought on holiday etc.
Cowbridge is about 15 minutes away from St Athan - we drive through it on the way to the airport sometimes.
That was lovely Rosie thank you. Looking at other peoples house etc. is one of my favorite pastimes!

Ooo, I love your home! We've still got to hang our pictures now the decorating is finished (!!) and I can't wait to fill all the plain walls. Am looking forward to seeing Cowbridge in the "flesh"!x
Oh this is a fabulous blog, Rosie... so often when someone describes something, I find myself aching to see it - and there are all these wonderful pictures here to satisfy my curiosity. Your home looks fabulous - full of fascinating bits and pieces - love the odd bare bust lurking hither and thither.
Must come to Cowbridge sometime (two good reasons now with you and Fennie)- it sounds (and looks) very lovely.
What a wonderful place to live and a beautiful home and garden. Pleasure to read your blog and see the great photos.
Rose, your home is lovely. I could feel the warmth and quirkiness just looking at those pictures. Those costumes are just divine. I used to model for a lady who had a fabulous collection of vintage clothes from 1890 to 1970. We used to go around the village halls with her show. I love all that stuff.
What a beautiful post, Rosie. 'Where you live' is intriguing. Thank you for including the link to your community - so nice to see the real thing and not have to imagine. Are Cowbridge and Cardiff close to one another? I find it so interesting to think of largish communities being close enough to one another for a person to be able to maintain ties with a drama club, bridge club etc.
You have transported me from the wilds of the Breton countryside just wakign form winter to an England in bloom I rmember from my childhood, thank you Rosie! Youare terribly talented adm I am overwhelmed with your skills wiht needle and stencil not to mention house and garden!
I love your home. It has so much spirit. And I like houses with spirit.
Where do I start ??
I loved your whole blog. That is why I am posting here.
Feel I am taking a personal tour
with you at my side.
What a interesting life, you've led and still do.
Thanks for sharing.Would like to know you better.
